With the wonderful world of sewing machines and fusible tape, you might think that hand sewing would be a thing of the past. Not so! Multiple pieces of fabric may need to be basted together before they can be machine-sewn together: just pinning it together would be too bulky or the fabric may be very slippery. Some stitches would require special sewing machine attachments or are difficult to create on sewing machine. Some things are actually easier to do by hand, especially if you work with a finicky fabric.
Besides, sometimes its nice to just sit on the couch and sew while you listen to the TV or radio. Heck, you can even take your sewing outside so you can get some fresh air and sunshine.

This is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a complete listing of hand stitches. These are just a few of the basics. For more information, look for a basic sewing book from companies like Vogue or Simplicity.
