[Scan of a Dremel]

Rotary Tool

This tool is hard to describe if you've never seen it in action. The main body of the tool is it's handle. The tip of the tool spins. (That's where "rotary" comes from.) Depending on what bit you have attached, you can use the tool to drill holes, sand, cut, polish, engrave, etc. On the positive side, these tools are versatile and are good for people whose hands are too small to use traditional power tools. On the negative side, these tools are sometimes not as powerful as traditional power tools.

Common brand names include Sear's Craftsman and Black & Decker. The "grand-daddy" of rotary tools is Dremel (which is why you sometimes see rotary tools referred to as "dremels".) You can find attachments and other "extras" for converting a rotary tool into other "power tools", like a drill press or a router.
