Use 1 part wheat starch to 4 parts distilled water. If you have to, you can substitute flour for the wheat starch, but it's not going to be as "paste-like" when you're done. (It will be more ... gooey.) Add water to starch. Put over medium heat. Stir constantly with a sturdy wire whisk. (This is important as this mixture really wants to be lumpy.) It will eventually begin to thicken. Continue cooking for 5 minutes.
You can also do this in the microwave, although you'll need to add more water (1 part flour to 5 parts distilled water). Nuke on high for 25 to 30 seconds. Stir. Repeat 4 to 6 times. (How often you will need to repeat this will depend on how strong your microwave is.)
However you heat it, let the mixture cool and then strain. You can store this in the refridgerator for a week or so, as long as you keep it tightly covered. You'll know when it goes bad: it begins to smell really funky and new life forms appear on the top.
